CFTT Celebrates 30 Years of Service!

By Patricia Colleen Murphy, Volunteer

The 30th anniversary of Colorado Farm to Table in Salida comes after a banner year for the organization: in 2025, the farm yielded 39,756 pounds of cabbage, 38,800 pounds of broccoli, 15,173 pounds of winter squash, and 5,270 pounds of summer squash, totaling 98,999 pounds.

What began three decades ago as a graceful act of generosity has grown into a statewide effort that continues to expand its reach at a time when food insecurity is rising across Colorado. In 1996, career farmer Tony Madone Jr. planted a two-acre garden in Salida and donated every harvest to those in need. That simple but profound commitment laid the foundation for what would become Colorado Farm to Table, officially established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2006.

CFTT's mission remains unchanged: to grow, harvest, and distribute fresh, nutritious produce at no cost to food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries. Currently, CFTT works closely with 24 distribution partners in nine counties throughout Colorado including Chaffee, Custer, Denver, Fremont, Lake, Montrose, Park, San Luis Valley, and Summit counties. This produce reaches families in areas where access to healthy food can be inconsistent for many households.

The impact of CFTT is made possible through a strong network of food distribution partners, including regional food banks, local pantries, and community organizations that ensure fresh produce reaches families efficiently and with dignity. Equally vital are the nearly 100 dedicated volunteers who show up consistently throughout the year to help with many tasks including planting, harvesting, sorting, and delivery.

Looking ahead, Colorado Farm to Table is also embracing the future of agriculture through sustainability. In 2025, the organization continued its transition toward more sustainable farming practices, seeing measurable improvements in soil health and water retention—critical factors in Colorado’s often arid climate.

A key part of the organization’s future is leadership. Farm Director TJ McDaniel, hired in 2014, has stepped forward as a next-generation leader, helping guide the organization toward innovative and environmentally responsible farming methods. With fresh ideas and a strong commitment to the mission, TJ represents both continuity and evolution. A Kansas native, TJ relocated to Salida to apprentice under founder Mr. Madone, gaining hands-on expertise in high-altitude agriculture and the complexities of nonprofit farming. In addition to TJ’s excellent leadership, another key player in organizational strength is Laurie Kari, Executive Director since 2023. Laurie drives organizational success through grant writing, fundraising, program management, volunteer coordination, strategic planning, and administrative oversight.
